Truthwitch Party Ideas

As you all my or my not know I’m part of Susan Dennard street team and we have to come up with 5 party ideas. So hear we go. Enjoy!!!

Idea 1 Message In a bottle

Those bottle contained one of the main characters in Truthwitch. The idea is you pick a bottle, read the message in the bottle and have to find either your Truthwitch, threadwitch, windwitch or bloodwitch.

Idea 2 Cookies

Back in October our Water girls came up with a reading challenge with an elemental book title for example:

Idea 3 Act a Scene

I’ve created a game from Susan’s Something Strange and Deadly series and her new series Truthwitch. It’s a fun game for everyone to join in and once the game is finished, play again.

Scene you will find in the jar:

Truthwitch

1)  Wind thrashed upward, spraying Safi’s hair from her face and almost pushing her away-except that Merik moved in. He pressed Safi to the rock, and in a roar of wind and heat, he kissed her.

2)  And with a harsh exhale, he stomped all the around to the opposite side of the table. “Really?” she cried. “Am I that awful to be around?” You are.” “I just want to look at the agreement!” She tossed her hands high. “Shouldn’t I know what my uncle expects from you? Expects from me?”

3)  A fatal mistake for anyone but a Bloodwitch, and as a guild hilted knife thunked into Aeduan’s shoulder, a temper he rarely released rumbled to life-then erupted. With a battle cry, Aeduan ripped his sword from its scabbard and attacked the person ahead—the person’s whose knife was now scraping against his shoulder bone. A man with fair hair.

4)  Not only did she know the four-step-a Nabrevnan dance popular between lovers or performed as a feat of athletic prowess-but she was good at it.

5)  “I almost forgot-I have a gift for you.” Iseult plied a leather cord from her blouse and tugged it over her head. Safi;s forehead crinkled, her thoughts and guilt swirling away. “Is this a Threadstone?” “Yeah.” Iseult nudged her with her left elbow. “It’s a ruby.” “But aren’t Threadstones for finding Hear-Threads?” “Not necessarily. They can be used to find anyone in your Thread-family.” Iseult eased a second stone from her dirty blouse. “I have a match, see? Now, when either of us is in danger, the stone will light up. They’ll dim the closer we get to each other.”

6)  “You can, though.”Kullen angled forward, flour puffing from the top of the sack. Were the situation any different, it would’ve made Merik-and Kullen-laugh. “If you get to Lejna and you get your trade agreement, then it’ll all work out. You’re destined for greatness, Merik. I still believe that.

7)  A madi spotted Aeduan trudging over the path. She screamed; the glass in her hands fell—and shattered. Aeduan would have simple strolled on if the woman hadn’t then shrieked, Demon!” “Yes,” her growled, his wet boots slapping onto the patio. He locked eyes with her; she trembled. “I am a demon, and if you scream again. I will make sure the Void claims your soul.”

8)  Safiya mistook his distress for laughter. “Do you think this is funny? Because I’m not laughing Prince.” “Nor am I,” he answered. “And I told you to be quite.” “No you told me to push, Which I did-except that you fell. Where was your wonderful Windwitchery then?” “I must’ve left it onboard the Jane.” Abdomen tightening, he lifted his face close to her. “Right next to my patience for your constant harping.” As long as he stayed angry, he wouldn’t have to think about the shape of her mouth. The weight of her hips pressing into his. Her eyed thinned. “If you think this is harping, you’re in for quite a treat-”

9)  Safi acted instantly-as did the monk. His sword swished from its scabbard; her knife came up. She clipped the edge of his blade, parrying it aside. He recovered and lunged. Safi lurched back. Her calves hit Iseult. Yet in a single fluid movement, Iseult kneeled-and Safi rolled sideways over her. Initiate. Complete. It was how the girls fought. How they lived. Safi unfurled from her flip and withdrew her sword just as Iseult’s moon scythes clinked free. Far behind them, more explosions thundered out. Shouts rose, the horsed kicked and whinnied. Iseult span for the monk’s chest. He jumped backward and skipped onto the carriage wheel. Yet where Safi had expected a moment of distraction, she only got the monk diving a her from above. He was good. The best fight she’d ever faced. But Safi and Iseult were better.

Something Strange and Deadly Series

1) With his hands still planted on my arms and with his lips curved in a satisfied grin, he drawled: “I’m Daniel Sheridan, by the way.” He said it so casually, as if all introductions were preceded by manhandling. “Pleasure to meet you, Miss…” I twisted free. The rascal. The scalawag. I gave him my haughtiest stare. “I am Miss Eleanor Fitt of the Philadelphia Fitts.” He flashed his eyebrows and doffed an imaginary hat. “Why then, you’re practically royalty.” He whirled around and strode back into the lab. The door slammed shut behind him.

2) I gulped and turned my attention to Jie. Now that I knew he was a she it seemed obvious–the soft curve of her face, the grace in her tiny hands, and the definite roundness near her bosom. But then why the dickens did she dress like a boy? I stared at her linen trousers and matching blazer. She even wore a cherry-red necktie at the nape of a white shirt. And if that wasn’t masculine enough, her hair was braided down her back while the front half of her head was shaved completely bald. “You done admiring me? she asked. Her voice was a sweet soprano, and only the faintest accent clung to her words. “I, uh–” “You never seen a Chinese person before?” She shoved her hands in her pockets and scowled.

3)  The key, I saw, was in destroying their legs, so I rushed forward and hurled my parasol at a corpse’s knew. The joint splinted and rolled inward; and before the Dead could grasp at me, I shoved it with my parasol. Down it went.

4) She was the same girl from the summer—fierce, quick to smile, and unafraid—but there was a new dullness in her eye. “You don’t like it here,” I started. “Is it that obvious?” Her eyes slid to mine. “It’s not the city’s fault, or even the Parisians’. Truth is, I’ve just been lonely.” “Me too.” I sighed and hooked her arm in mine. “But now we’re together.” She chuckled. “And I’m glad for it, yeah?” Suddenly her breath caught, and she wrenched free. “Eleanor, you have two hands! How?” “Uh, w-well,” I stammered. It was all fine to avoid mentioning Oliver, but this would certainly need an explanation. Stupid Eleanor! Why hadn’t I prepared an answer for this?

5) Without thinking, I acted. I threw my hands up, latching onto my spiritual energy, and drawing in a warm, buzzing well of power. Then, like cracking a whip, I flung it at the body. The instant my magic touched the Dead, a leash formed between us—but not a leash I could control. This corps wasn’t bound to a necromancer. It was one of the Hungry: animated by a spark and searching frantically for any soul to consume. I had no idea how to blast its magic back to the spirit realm. That was Joseph’s trick, and it needed electricity. Yet I found I could affect the corpse. I could pump my will into it. “Stay!” My voice ripped out, high and desperate. “Stay back!”

6) “You saved my life, Empress. And Joseph’s. I reckon that makes us even.” “Even,” I murmured, not particularly aware of what I was saying. My eyes were stuck on Daniel’s throat. On the faint flutter of his pulse. It was… fascinating. It meant he was alive. We were both alive. Without thinking, I rolled onto my tiptoes and brushed my lips over that patch of skin, over his heartbeat. He stiffened. I lurched back. Heat flushed through me. “I-I am so sorry,” I tried to say, but my voice barely squeezed through my pinched throat. And Daniel simply gaped at me, slack-jawed and frozen.

7)  “Empress. I need you to know something.” Then a long inhale, and he closed the space between us. “A few years ago,” he said, lowering his hand, “when I first met Joseph, I made a promise to myself. I swore I would live my life unflinching. Unafraid. Just like Joseph does. No matter how hard I try, though, I never seem to do that with you. Whatever you’re near, I flinch. Whenever I want you most, I always pull away. But…no more.” He shook his head once. “I’m going to tell you exactly how I feel-right now-and you can take it or you can leave it.  I just want you to know….I need you to know.” “I don’t know what’s coming, but I do know what’s behind us. We go back and forth all the time-me and you. Saving each other, fighting, flirtin…And unafraid, I..am…in love with you.”

8)  “So that I may look the fool next to you?” I grinned, and Allison blinked. “Whatever do you mean?” Do not pretend you aren’t prettier that I.” Still smiling, I moved to my dress box and towed of the top. “Prettier than you,” Allison repeated softly, and I glanced at her in surprise. Her forehead was creased. “Do you really think that?” “It’s the truth, isn’t it?” I shrugged helplessly. “In all honesty, Allison, I have always envied your beauty. And all you friends. And, your wealth.” She shook her head, her frown only deepening. “People were not really my friends, Eleanor. It was all because of Father, Mercy, Patience-I spent all my time with them, but they were never like…like your friendship. With Miss Chen.”

9)  Jie, on the other hand, fidgeted and swung something in her hand. A sword.”Take this,” she said, extending it to me. A forehead bunched up. It was dented, chipped thing as long as her arm and double-edged. A laugh escaped my throat. “This was from Philadelphia. The ancient Roman sword you stole from the Centennial Exhibition.” “Yeah.” She bared a tight grin. “It still works fine, even if it is a thousand years old. I’ve kept it in my luggage since Philadelphia.” My left hand wrapped around the hilt. “But what will fight with.” She wiggled her fingers at me. “These will do fine. Here…” “Be careful, Eleanor.” “You too, Jie.”

10)              Is this real?” he asked softly. “Or am I sleeping?” I laughed, a soft but genuine laugh. “It real.” Ever so slowly, as if he feared the moment might break, Daniel eased closer. The breeze kept sweeping; the grass kept singing. He shook his head, almost in wonderment. “I have no idea where that dress came from, but I would say it was made for you. I gave a shy smile, and happy heat warmed my face. He grinned back and swopped into a graceful bow. “May i have this dance?” “There’s no music.” “We don’t need music.” “The last time we danced, at that ball in Paris, you were bewitched. I want you to have a new memory of dancin’ with me.” He eased into a slow one-two-three. “And I want to have a new memory too.”

Cover Reveal Exclusive: Making of the Air Awakens Covers

Meril’s Q&A:

What program do you use to create your artwork?

I use various tools to create artwork. When starting out with ideas I prefer making them on my sketchbook first, not minding specific details and just having fun with idea generation and doodling. This is the stage we call ‘thumbnails’. The next step I usually use the digital media to finalize the thumbnails, but sometimes I go straight out and sketch my favorite thumbnail to turn into a finished linesketch. As such, all my finished artworks are painted and done in Adobe Photoshop (CC 2014, currently), along with my old and trusted Wacom Intuos 4.

What’s your background? Did you study art in school?

I finished university in 2014 with a degree of Bachelor of Finearts, Major in Advertising Arts. My Alma Mater is the University of Santo Tomas here in Manila, Philippines. The course I took focused on graphic design, branding and marketing for agencies, which is a very good background to have in any art industry. During our 3rd year to 4th year we had special classes we called ‘Electives’, which are basically specialized classes, this was the time I decided on focusing more on digital painting and illustration, rather than going into graphic designing, so I took electives related to my chosen field. By the time I got to the thesis phase, which is the final requirement before finishing the course, I decided to take on Book Illustration. I’ve learnt many things from my background that if it weren’t for it I’m not sure if I’ll be able to do the same things I’m doing right now.

What attracted you to doing the covers for the AIR AWAKENS series?

The AIR AWAKENS series was my very first book cover series. I’m not going to lie that I first took interest on the project because it was an opportunity for me to finally work on the book industry. Any artist starting out would be uncontrollably excited when offered a project as such. And THEN I read the story, read about the characters, got to know an amazing client and author, a friend, and so there lies my true answer. It was the perfect project for me, I loved the world, I loved the characters and I loved the idea behind it all. And so I wanted to make sure that I make it very special.

What is your favorite cover so far?

That’s hard to say. I loved all of it so far! (Or I’m being extremely biased, because well, I worked hard on all of them! haha) But if I’m being asked as an artist I would probably say the first cover. It was simple, straight to the point, saying, ‘Hey, this is Vhalla, the Heroine for this amazing world/story’. I like covers that has that iconic, unique feeling to it and so I would say that the first cover definitely did it for this series.

(Without any spoilers) What did you like about the third book in the AIR AWAKENS series: Earth’s End?

Earth’s End is my favorite of the 3 books so far and my main reason is that it felt like everything was coming down together, finally! Especially for Vhalla. I loved the Vhalla in this book. The character has developed into something much more and although she’s still probably transitioning, she’s finally getting there. In general what I liked about Earth’s End is that there’s more action, more storyline focused on Vhalla and her world, there were more things learned about the other characters too such as Baldair, among many others. Elise has outdone herself with this one.

What’s one thing that you think would surprise people about the process of creating the AIR AWAKENS covers? Or, one thing people may not know?

Elise has always told me that she and her author friends never expect their artist to read the whole manuscript. And I read the whole thing because well, I just couldn’t help it. I have become very attached! She says I make the most ‘official-est’ fanart ever and I agree.

Elise’s Q&A:

How did you come to work with zwxArt (Meril Chan)?

Well, when I decided to self-publish I knew the cover art would be one of the most important things about my book, and I also knew I wanted drawn artwork over photography. I, personally, feel like it’s “iconic high-fantasy” to have a painted cover and so that’s what I began searching for. Also, as an indie author, I wanted to work with someone else who wasn’t a big cover art company and perhaps was just getting their start also. So I was thumbing through DeviantArt for illustrators I liked and I found Meril.

It was the image below that made me know I needed to work with her. It was like she’d already created something that I thought captured the essence of Air Awakens, even if the visuals I wanted were completely different.

Can you explain the process from the author’s perspective? How are covers made?

Well, I can only explain in my limited experience. It’s my understanding that traditional authors get little to no control over what their covers look like. For me, I started by sending Meril what had been my query letter and a handful of scenes I pulled out from the story. I also sent her the draft manuscript in case she wanted to find how a particular scene I’d chosen to pull out fit in. I’d been told that cover artists are too busy to read their client’s work in its entirety, so I wasn’t offended by the notion of just handing her some scenes.

To my surprise, Meril read it all. Talk about knowing you made the right choice as an author! I seriously count my blessings every day for this.

So, Meril reads my draft manuscripts (she’s usually among the very first to read them before my editor) and then she begins drafting thumbnails. These are very rough, quick sketches to give me an idea of the layout. She explains a bit of each, what she sees as the inspiration and story for each cover. From there we tweak them.

Tweaking can be everything from, “What if she’s holding…” to “I like the third and fifth sketch, can you try to merge them?”

This process can take anywhere from two days to a week, depending on how long I need to stare at them and how many changes are being made.

Following that, Meril moves onto the final sketch with a bit more detail. Once we’re certain we’re on the same page with the final direction she starts rendering. As an author this stage of the process is basically magic to me. Because she transforms (granted, an already amazing rough) into an even more amazing final illustration.

When she’s close to the final she sends it to me (by this point I’ve already poked her for updates because I’m way too excited not to) and we do any last-minute editing like color changes, softening lines, or adding small details.

Once all that is done she sends me the final illustration and I do the text layout on it. And, that’s how the Air Awakens covers come to life!

What’s your favorite cover so far?

I like them all… They each have something that I think is perfect for the book they’re representing about them… I suppose, it’s a toss-up between Earth’s End and Fire Falling. Earth’s End just wows me with the background Meril created, it’s going to be a gorgeous hardcover book. There’s also a lot of teasers in there. But, Fire Falling has Aldrik on the cover, and that’s never a bad thing!

Earth’s End Book Illustration: An In-depth Process

By Merilliza Chan

RCwFJRIb

Hello reader! Welcome to my first blog post.

On today’s topic, I’ll be showing you my journey on how I made the illustration for Elise Kova’s 3rd installment of the Air Awakens series; Earth’s End.

I’ll be covering the initial stages in depth, from thumbnails, artistic insights to design problems and finally to the finished painting.

Are you excited? Me too! Let’s get to it!

Idea Generation

2The one thing we all dread at times is how to come up with ideas. Where do we even begin? I suppose to most artists this part is usually not a problem since creativity tends to just start flowing once we start and get really into it. With Elise’s series it was much easier because the story was already laid out in the open for me to interpret (Elise sends initial manuscript and excerpts for me to read and interpret as I go). But for the most part, sometimes we just get stuck and don’t know what direction to go for. With that said, the initial problem I encountered with this project was proper visualization and relevance.

There are questions that roam my mind during idea generation stage. How do I make sure the cover stays relevant to the story without giving away too much content, along with random ones and others like; what easter eggs should I put in that the readers could go back to notice and enjoy in the cover? What is the mood I’m going to portray? Do I pick out specific scenes or do I go with the abstract route? Etc.  These type of questions usually guide me into conceptual thinking.

Thumbnails

Thumbnails in general is a fun part for me. It’s like juggling with the many possibilities and scenarios in the story and envisioning them through very simple drawings where I don’t need to worry too much about technicalities and problem solving.
3

(Earth’s End initial thumbnails. There’s usually huge blocks of texts below each thumbnail to help my client understand the idea, but for this post I removed it because they indicate a lot of spoilers for the book.)

My thumbnails are usually way messier than this. The type that only I could make sense of what’s actually going on. They normally involve a lot of circle and square shapes. I usually make plenty of the initial scribbles on a scratch of paper (ones that look quite disposable) and then choose the few ones that I liked and transfer them digitally, just to make them a little more readable. There are times I go straight digital when a pen and paper isn’t in sight.

(Click here to see the old thumbnails for Book 1 and 2, Air Awakens and Fire Falling)

So with every cover that I’ve done for Elise, as well as any illustration in general, I always start with thumbnails to get the initial ideas set out, while still trying to keep in mind the many questions I’ve mentioned above.  It’s important to note that in this process I don’t really pay attention to how pretty and well done any of the elements are, just that thought of wanting to put everything down on paper before it gets lost in the abyss of my mind. Though I do make sure that the main elements are somewhat readable, since well, a client is going to look through them.

Preliminary Painting Studies and Reference Gathering

Before I go venturing into the unknown, I want to make sure I’m prepared for the journey. So I did some studies to warm up that artsy area of my brain in the hopes of increasing my chances of actually not screwing up. That, and basically trying to understand trees and forest scenery.

While I waited for Elise to choose a suitable idea, I went and gathered a lot of other forest references. As well as illustrations from various artists I deeply admire. Inspiring illustrations that I think will be relevant to how I’ll go about with this piece. I also have a reference board to help me organize and put everything in place. (I use the program refBoard sampled below).

Something Strange & Deadly Part Two Discussion Questions

My fellow Waterwitch, Stephanie is conducting a readalong running from OCT 10 – JAN 4. We want people to come together to read or reread Susan Dennard series Something Strange and Deadly to celebrate her fabulous writing. Feel free to join up and there will be giveaways as well.

zombies

Q: Were you surprised at who was behind the sudden zombie uprising?

A: OMG yes, should have seen it coming when her brother left that letter in her bedroom or maybe I didn’t want to think it was him after all.

Q: What would you do if you were in the same situation as Elanora and her brother?

A: I don’t have any brothers, only a little sister. We believe there is dark and good magic out there although I wouldn’t go out there and try it because you don’t know what you could conjure up.

Q: What do you think about Daniel’s answer to Eleanor’s question? Do you think he was being honest?

A: Of course not, he is in love with her, their passion kiss told us all but looking at the high class Eleanor isn’t apposed to be with a man who is lower class or in fact a murderer. I hoping they will see each other again and who cares what people say or spread around, if two people love each other so be it. Get over it :).

Q: What was your first impression of Jie?

A: Jie is a woman, I did not see that but it was pretty funny to find out she wasn’t a man after all. I love the scene where she wiped Daniel ass in a card game or more or less she cheated. She a character I love to hang around with although people might get the wrong impression cause she not a man but a women. She fierce, hopeful that Eleanor will return one day, properly cause hanging around men each day and she needs a women to talk to about girlie things with.

Q: Which character were you the most sorry to meet their end?

A: I hate when writers come up with character that are obnoxious, annoying and they get under your skin. But Clarence didn’t deserve the ending he got although I just wished he left town and started a new life. Finding out Elijah was the necromancer and he needed to die for the cruel revenge he plotted on others and trying to make his father proud of him. I did shed a tear for him when he died but even through his body was taken over by Marcus, I am hoping that he still in there able to communicate. Love to learn more about his journey around the world and where he went crazy.

Q: What was the biggest twist in the story for you?

A: When I found out who was the necromancer. I always had in my mind that Clarence had something to do with the zombie uprise and he was being over the top, wanting more protection and wanted to save his sorry ass.

Q: Who is your favourite character in the first book and why?

A: Jie is my favourite character throughout the novel, we heard a little of her past, where she is from but I reckon there more about her. We know about Daniel’s and Joseph’s past but not much on her. I can’t wait till we met her again in future novels.

Q: How would you convince your friends to read this book?

A: Read this novel if you love suspense, surprises and twists and turns. It doesn’t have a lot of zombies if your not overly a fan of zombies. Give this book a try and who knows you may love it or hate it.

zombies

Q: How do you think you would react to the dead walking around in your city?

A: I freak out over the smallest thing and make a big drama over nothing although zombies are a BIG thing, I’ll have everything in the house barricaded, find anything that I can use as a weapon. Reading has the power to teach you to learn how to defend and fight for survival.

Q: What do you think about the dead? Are you glad it isn’t too Zombie-ish, or were you hoping for a more Zobie-esque theme?

A: To be honest I didn’t know this was a zombie book until my clan was having a discussion one day but to be honest I really didn’t care, books can surprise you in many ways. I love the mix Susan had brought to this first half of the novel a bit of zombies here and there, the gadgets, ghost/spirit and all.

Q: How do you feel about Eleanor as a character?

A: I like Eleanor, she describes me as well, she is very down to earth, she is very curious and wants to get to the truth even if it gets you into trouble at the end of the day. Never good to keep secrets but sometimes you have to protect the ones you love.

Q: What was your first impression of Daniel Sheridan? Joseph Boyer?

A: I love Daniel and Joseph they have something different about them but as a team it works well. Daniel had this cocky rudeness about him but you ignore it and warm up to him. Joseph is sweet, kind, gentle and is a person you look up to.

Q: What was your favourite part of the first half of the book and why?

A: When we met the spirit hunters, everything that was happening with the zombies, séance, the spirit, started to make sense, I started to understand what this book is about.

Q: If you haven’t read this before (or already finished it), what are your theories for the second half of the book OR even the rest of the series?

A: I think Eleanor and spirit hunter will get to the bottom of the truth but I don’t think they will get the ending they wish for. Being a trilogy it’s got to be the beginning of something strange to come. Clarence is hiding something that I can’t put my finger to it yet, can’t wait to find out what he is hiding and her brother Elijah is hiding a dark secret, don’t think he is a zombie but he might be putting the family in danger.

As for the rest of series, I don’t think the zombies aren’t over yet or something more dangerous than zombies will get Eleanor and the spirit hunters thinking.

Q: Bonus: Share with us some of your favourite quotes!

  • “Dead! a women screamed It’s the Dead!”
  •  “My daughter’s biggest vices are curiosity and a fondness for buttered toast.”
  • ‘In an instant I understood Elijah’s favourite line from Macbeth: “There’s daggers in men’s smile.”
  • “Why are you talkin’ like that?” “Like what?” “Like you’re a kitten.” “I thought it mite calm you.” “I don’t need calming,” he snapped.
  •  “Miss Fitt, you know curiosity gets met killed.” I grinned. “Then I daresay it’s good I’m a woman.”
  • I might have to trust Daniel Sheridan, but I didn’t have to like him.
  • Life still needed living even if there was something strange and deadly going on in Philadelphia.
  • Curiosity is a strong fire, and once ignited, it is not easily put out.
  • Grimoires, spirit power, and voodoo. It was more horrifying and fantastic than I’d ever imagined
  • “Do you have a death wish?” “Or do you visit such deadly places by accident?”
  • “Can’t say I’m surprised you were here. You have the curiosity of cat and the common sense of a goldfish.”

First Part called Ship Ahoy Witches

Anyone who doesn’t’ know, I like to express who I am, which is doing arts & craft. I have chosen this time around I was going to do a Photo College but not any that you usually see. My first idea was to do a ship based around the Truthwitch story but that idea was fading very fast. Frustrated that the idea was working, I ended up coming up with the water symbol as my college. The ship college stilled sailed on. Also thank-you mum for the help also 🙂

Questionnaire

Q: What inspired you to write Willow Hall?

A: I had a story in mind for a long time about an orphanage environment. I got stuck for ideas until I stumbled on a clipping about an author who actually lived his early years in an orphanage. I bought his book and requested that I use some of his experience in my book, although his wasn’t about ghosts. We have become close friends since.

Q: What’s the hardest part writing your books?

A:Reaching a dead end. Time consumed in research.

Q: Has any of your own experiences reflected in your writing?

A:Yes, I was educated by nuns in a Catholic primary school. The discipline was brutal although some of the nuns seemed maternal. Orphanages were also run by nuns, however, they were more regimental and cruel to their students. The story about that reflects the cruelty the children experienced by the nuns.

Q: How did you begin writing? Did you intend to become an author, or do you have a specific reason or reasons for writing a book?

A: I always loved making up stories and characters. What urged me on to write a book was when I attended a creative writing class at my local university. I needed to see that I was on the right track where it came to write a book. I also read lots of material on the subject and joined writing groups online and a local group in my community.

Q: What’s more important: characters or plot?

A: In my opinion I would say both, however the first important aspect is working on the plot then creating characters to fit the story plot.

Q: What do you want people to take away from your book, is there any hidden message you want people to grasp.

A:That there is good and evil everywhere. Sadness, love, loneliness, survival; the list goes on but what really stands out is how a person can be resilient and grow up from a bad experience and still be a good person.

Q: What‘s the earliest memory you have of writing a story?

A: Mainly my childhood. I wrote an essay for my class assignment. My teacher kept it because she liked it so much.

Q: What is your least favourite of the writing process?

A: It’s having a mental block and stumbling out of a nightmare and feeling like I’ve come to a complete stand still and having to work my way out. Its the time wasted in finding ideas that strike me as distressing. This book Willow Hall took me six years to write. What’s more the least favourite bit of the writing process for me was the editing process. It is so draining on the mind and can be dreadful when I have missed typo errors even though I have read it over and over many times.

Q: What authors do you like to read? What book or books have had a strong influence on you or your writing?

A:I have many authors I like; I give them all the benefit of my doubt. The kind of books that influence me are autobiographies and true stories about the author’s struggles. The story of Anne Frank is what pushes my thoughts to how life was like during the holocaust, how friendships are pushed past the boundaries. It brings out the worst and the best in people.

Q: Who would be your dream cast?

A: I wrote this book for my main character to be Ben Whishaw as Darcy (protagonist) and Hugh Grant as Father Hugh Delaney (the misunderstood antagonist) As for the remainder of the cast; that’s anyone’s guess. If it were to become a film in the future, I’d leave it to the casting crew to work through it.

Q: What are we to expect in the Reckoning?

A: An excellent ending to Darcy’s struggle with his past and to finally have Tilly out of his life forever.

Q: What are your plans to do after the sequel?

A: I’d like to try a story with humour for a change, although, I like stories where I can turn them into mysteries and keep the reader guessing to the very end. I have titles and plots in mind however I want to hold that for later.

Q: Any last thoughts for our readers?

A: If you like ghost stories you might want to give Willow Hall a good work out. I have read many ghost stories in my life and have found none of them to appease me. That’s also why I wrote this book, I like a good ghost story.

Third part called ‘Asked Sooz’

Q: What inspired you to create a world about witches and where did the six clan idea come from?

A: The idea for “witches” came to me right as I was falling asleep—I heard the word Threadwitch. I instantly snapped awake and started to wonder what a Threadwitch was, what kind of word she lived in, and what other “witches” there might be. I ended up imagining so many kinds of witches that it got a bit unwieldy, so to simplify/smooth things out, I came up with the 6 elements. Now every kind of witchery falls into one of those elements: Aether, Earth, Water, Air, Fire, and Void.

Q: In your opinion what was the hardest step creating a masterpiece story for the Something Strange and Deadly series and Truthwitch?

A: As for the hardest step creating my stories, well…every book is different. And honestly, that’s a challenge for me! I want to be able to use the same method each time I write a book, but I’ve found that no two books come out in the same way. I just have to accept that and discover the story by whatever means necessary. 🙂

Synopsis

On a continent ruled by three empires, some are born with a “witchery”, a magical skill that sets them apart from others. In the Witchlands, there are almost as many types of magic as there are ways to get in trouble—as two desperate young women know all too well. Safiya is a Truthwitch, able to discern truth from lie. It’s a powerful magic that many would kill to have on their side, especially amongst the nobility to which Safi was born. So Safi must keep her gift hidden, lest she be used as a pawn in the struggle between empires. Iseult, a Threadwitch, can see the invisible ties that bind and entangle the lives around her—but she cannot see the bonds that touch her own heart. Her unlikely friendship with Safi has taken her from life as an outcast into one of reckless adventure, where she is a cool, wary balance to Safi’s hotheaded impulsiveness. Safi and Iseult just want to be free to live their own lives, but war is coming to the Witchlands. With the help of the cunning Prince Merik (a Windwitch and ship’s captain) and the hindrance of a Bloodwitch bent on revenge, the friends must fight emperors, princes, and mercenaries alike, who will stop at nothing to get their hands on a Truthwitch.

Cassandra Clare Lady Midnight Cover revealed!!!

Cassandra Clare just recently unveiled the cover to her latest novel, Lady Midnight, is based five years from the events of the Mortal Instruments. This cover blew me away, I wasn’t expecting this, hours before the cover was released, I was thinking to myself of course that the cover was going to be something similar to her pervious books. Wow what a surprise, stunned, no words to explain how I was feeling.

AngelWings

Synopsis

Los Angeles. It’s been five years since the events of the Mortal Instruments when Nephilim stood poised on the brink of oblivion and Shadowhunter Emma Carstairs lost her parents. After the blood and violence she witnessed as a child, Emma has dedicated her life to to discovering exactly what it was that killed her parents and getting her revenge.

Raised in the Los Angeles Institute with the Blackthorn family, Emma is paired as a parabatai with her best friend, Julian Blackthorn. A series of murders in the city catch her attention — they seem to have the same characteristics as the deaths of her parents. Could the murderer be the same person? And her attention isn’t the only one caught: someone has been murdering Downworlders as well. The Fair Folk make a deal with the Institute: if the Blackthorns and Emma will investigate the killings, they’ll return Mark Blackthorn to his home. The catch: they have only two weeks to find the killers. Otherwise it’s open war between faeries and Nephilim.

The Shadowhunters of the Institute must race against time to catch the killers, even as they begin to suspect the involvement of those closest to them. At the same time, Emma is falling in love with the one person in the world she’s absolutely forbidden by Shadowhunter Law to love. Set against the glittering backdrop of present-day Los Angeles, Emma must learn to trust her head and her heart as she investigates a demonic plot that stretches from the warlock-run nightclubs of the Sunset Strip to the enchanted sea that pounds the beaches of Santa Monica.
